One’s style of the dress reveals the human obsession with both novelty(新奇，新颖) and tradition. People use clothing to declare their membership(表明资格或身份) in a particular social group; however, the rules for what is acceptable dress for that group may change. In affluent societies(富足的社会), this changing of the rules is the driving force behind fashions. By keeping up with fashions(跟随时尚), that is, by changing their clothing style frequently but simultaneously, members of a group both satisfy(满足) their desire for novelty and obey the rules, thus demonstrating(显示，表明)their membership in the group.

Some people, particularly in the West, consider themselves of such high status that they do not need to display it with their clothing. However, it is likely that asubtle(微妙的)but important signal, such as an expensive wristwatch(手表), willprevail over(胜过) the message of the casual dress.
